Planning Your Voyage

What You Need to Know

Best Time to Cruise

The Antarctic expedition season runs from November to March. Early season (November-December) offers pristine ice formations, courting penguins, and long daylight hours. Mid-season (January) brings the warmest temperatures (around 0 degrees C) and maximum wildlife activity with penguin chicks hatching. Late season (February-March) is prime for whale watching as humpbacks and orcas feed in nutrient-rich waters. Bookings often sell out 12-18 months ahead; early planning is essential.

What to Expect

Expedition-style voyages on small, ice-strengthened ships carry 100-250 passengers, with expert naturalists leading Zodiac landings and lectures. Most departures leave from Ushuaia, Argentina, crossing the Drake Passage over two days to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. Expect encounters with gentoo, chinstrap, and Adelie penguin colonies numbering in the thousands, leopard seals, and breaching whales against a backdrop of tabular icebergs and volcanic peaks. Extended itineraries add the wildlife-rich Falkland Islands and South Georgia, home to king penguin colonies and elephant seals. Fly-cruise options bypass the Drake Passage entirely. Optional activities include sea kayaking, snowshoeing, polar camping, and even submersible dives on select ships.
